Main Studies

Dr Vasileios Papastavrou was born in 1978, grew up in Athens-Greece and graduated from Medical School in 2004 (Athens Kapodistrian University).

He began his ophthalmology training in Crete, Agios Nikolaos Hospital (6month term) and was successful in the MRCOphth part 1 examinations of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in the United Kingdom in 2006.

He continued his specialty training in ophthalmology in the UK, Newcastle upon Tyne university hospital (Royal Victoria Infirmary) and was granted the specialty training title in 2012 (specialty training exit exams in Athens-Greece), then successful in the FEBO exams 2013 (European board of Ophthalmology), as well as the UK Diploma in Ophthalmology (DRCOphth) in 2013. In addition succeeded in the Refraction Certificate (UK) and was granted the title of MRCOphth in 2014 by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in the UK.

During his training he was exposed in all aspects of ophthalmology sub specialties (Glaucoma, Cornea, paeds, oculoplastics, medical retina, vitreoretinal, lasers) and was involved in ophthalmic surgery completing more than 800 cataract operations before his exit exams.

Sub-specialty training and Consultancy

He trained as a medical retina fellow for 2 years in Royal Victoria Infirmary dealing with all retinal conditions, intravitreal and periocular injections, retinal lasers as well as retinal genetic conditions and electrophysiology.

Continuing on he trained in both Newcastle upon Tyne (Royal Victoria Infirmary) and London (Kings College Hospital) as a vitreoretinal fellow, dealing with surgical retina diseases, retinal detachment, trauma, severe diabetic retinopathy patients etc completing more than 500 operations.

Mr Papastavrou worked as a consultant ophthalmic surgeon in Newcastle upon Tyne for 1 year managing medical retina, vitreoretinal and general ophthalmology clinics in Royal Victoria Infirmary (Newcastle Eye centre), where after finishing he had more than 2000 cataract operations and 700 vitrectomies at that time.

He has published papers on numerous ophthalmology journals and carries on a thesis on a rare retinal genetic condition with significant similarities to Age related macular degeneration.

Current Posts

Dr Papastavrou currently manages vitreoretinal patients in Athens-Greece, in various clinics and runs his private diagnostic center in southern Athens, (Alimos). He works as a part time Consultant in the UK as well as Spamedica performing cataract surgery.
